Cross Stitch Time Calculator

The cross stitch time calculator estimates how long your project will take and gives you a realistic finish date.

It is not magic — it divides your stitch count by your speed. But it is usually much more accurate than guessing.

How long does cross stitch take?

Quick answer:

The average stitcher completes 100–175 stitches per hour. A 10,000-stitch project takes roughly 60–100 hours of actual stitching time. At one hour per day, that is 2–3 months.

Time estimates vary a lot depending on the design. Simple designs with large solid-colour blocks stitch faster than designs with many colour changes and fractional stitches. Full coverage projects take four to five times longer than the stitch count alone might suggest, because every square of the fabric is filled. See our beginners guide for tips on managing a long project.

Why cross stitch takes longer than you expect

The stitch count only accounts for the actual stitching. Real projects also include time to: separate and cut thread lengths, find your place in the pattern after a break, handle colour changes, re-do stitches that went in the wrong direction (frogging), and deal with thread that knots or tangles. A 10% to 20% time buffer on top of your calculated estimate is realistic for most people.

Frequently asked questions

Most stitchers average between 100 and 175 stitches per hour once they are past the beginner stage. 150 stitches per hour is a reasonable middle estimate. Beginners working on their first project might manage 50 to 80 stitches per hour while learning tension and direction.
