The most common mistake in cross stitch is cutting fabric too small. This calculator gives you exact dimensions before you cut — in inches or centimeters, for any Aida count.

Formula: fabric = (stitches ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

The cross stitch fabric formula

Fabric width = (stitch width ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

Fabric height = (stitch height ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

The border multiplied by 2 is because you add the same border on both sides. A 2-inch border on each side adds 4 inches to the total width. For fabric in centimeters, the result is multiplied by 2.54. See also: Aida fabric calculator for count-specific tools, or the Aida fabric guide if you are not sure which count to use.

Frequently asked questions

Use the CM toggle at the top of the calculator. The formula is the same — (stitch width ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2) — but the result is multiplied by 2.54 to convert from inches to centimeters. A 14-inch fabric piece is about 35.6 cm.
