What is Aida fabric?

Aida is a cotton fabric woven with a regular grid of holes, purpose-made for counted embroidery like cross stitch. The weave groups threads together to create clearly visible squares, each one a stitch position. The count number tells you how many of those squares fit into one inch — so 14-count gives 14 stitches per inch, and 18-count gives 18. More holes per inch means smaller stitches and finer detail. For more background, see our guide on what is Aida fabric.

How to calculate Aida fabric size

The formula

Fabric width = (stitch width ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

Fabric height = (stitch height ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

Worked example — 14-count

A 100×100 stitch design on 14-count Aida with a 2-inch border: width = (100 ÷ 14) + 4 = 7.14 + 4 = 11.14 inches. Round up to 11.5 inches when cutting.

Worked example — 28-count evenweave

On 28-count fabric stitched over 2 threads, the effective stitch size matches 14-count. So the same 100×100 stitch design gives the same fabric dimensions: about 11 inches square with a 2-inch border.

Frequently asked questions

14-count Aida has 14 holes per inch of fabric. Each hole is one stitch position, so a 14-count design gives you 14 stitches per inch in each direction. A 140-stitch wide design comes out at exactly 10 inches wide on 14-count fabric.
