14 Count Aida Fabric Calculator

14-count Aida is the most popular cross stitch fabric. If your pattern does not specify a count, it is almost certainly designed for 14-count. The calculator below works out exactly how much 14-count fabric you need for your design. Enter your stitch dimensions, set your border allowance, and get back the fabric size you need — in inches or centimeters. 14-count gives 14 stitches per inch, which means a 140-stitch wide design produces a 10-inch wide design area. Add your border (usually 2 inches on each side) and your total fabric width would be 14 inches. Most commercial cross stitch kits include a piece of 14-count Aida, and most pattern books assume you are working on 14-count unless they say otherwise. Standard DMC floss used on 2 strands works well on this count — the holes are a comfortable size and coverage is good without being bulky.
